Recognizing People For Who They Are, Not a Disease They Have.

The Colorado Stigma-Free Campaign is a state-wide initiative which aims to reduce the stigma associated with Substance Misuse Disorder (SMD).

We are dedicated to raising awareness of the disease of SMD and create a culture wherein residents who have the disease feel supported by their community and neighbors and feel free to seek treatment for the disease without fear of stigma.
Why Does it Matter in Colorado?

Our neighbors are in dire need of help. 1 in 10 Colorado residents ages 12+ reported having a Substance Misuse Disorder (SMD), according to the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2023).

Joining the Stigma-Free Campaign Will:

  • Educate residents that substance misuse disorder is a disease and must be treated as such
  • Raise awareness of the prevalence of SMD in our community
  • Provoke public interest in learning what is “Stigma-Free”
  • Providing residents an opportunity to become involved in their community
  • Allow people living with the disease to feel supported by their community and thus decrease feelings of isolation and shame
  • Link people in need to local substance misuse disorder and mental health resources
  • Raise awareness that care is accessible regardless of income.
