A Peer Recovery Coach is an individual who uses their personal experience with recovery from substance use
disorders (SUD) or mental health conditions to support and guide others on their recovery journey.

These coaches provide non-clinical assistance that focuses on removing barriers to recovery, enhancing the recovery process, and empowering individuals to achieve sustained wellness.

The main functions of a coach are:

• Support & Guidance
• Mentorship & Modeling
• Resource Connection
• Advocacy
• Empowerment

There is no legal requirement or governance at the state level in Colorado for someone who calls themselves a "Peer Recovery Coach" to have education or training in the field to provide support.

Credentials mean a lot.
They show that the person you choose to trust during a vulnerable moment in life has met professional standards in behavioral health, along with their lived recovery experience.
